Around 100 thousand Brumadinho region residents have already received compensation

Since the breach of Dam I of the Córrego do Feijão mine in Brumadinho, Minas Gerais, Brazil, which took place five months ago this week, around 100 thousand residents of the municipality and region have already received emergency compensation. Vale has worked with a total focus on repairing damage, with actions that include indemnities, donations to public agencies and impacted people, medical and psychological assistance, purchase of medications, among other services. In total, R$ 1.5 billion has been invested in environmental services, health materials, transportation and other logistical costs.



Compensation

To date, approximately 100,000 residents have received emergency compensation in the following municipalities: Brumadinho, Mário Campos, São Joaquim de Bicas, Betim, Juatuba, Igarapé, Florestal, Esmeraldas, Pará de Minas, São José da Varginha, Maravilhas, Fortuna de Minas, Pequi, Paraopeba, Curvelo, Pompéu and Papagaios. In total, more than 115 thousand people have scheduled or registered at the 16 offices of the Emergency Indemnity Register (PRI) that were organised by the company. These payments are valid for those who resided in Brumadinho on January 25 or who within 1 kilometer of the Paraopeba River channel between Brumadinho and the Retiro Baixo plant in the city of Pompéu. The agreement was signed by the Attorney General of the State of Minas Gerais, the Public Prosecutor's Office of the State of Minas Gerais, the Public Defender's Office of the State of Minas Gerais, the Federal Attorney General's Office, the Federal Public Ministry and the Public Defender's Office.

In relation to individual compensation for material and moral damages, 49 cases have already been closed. Signed by the Public Defender of Minas Gerais (DPMG), the Term of Commitment provides compensation for material and moral damages, aiming at a speedy and fair solution to individual damages. Vale will continue to help people affected who wish to discuss individual compensation, with the assistance of the Public Defender of Minas Gerais, without influencing the continuation of the on-going talks with authorities, aiming to repair social and environmental damage. 192 preliminary labour agreements have already been signed with representatives of the deceased and missing employees.

Other Vale actions include the treatment, psychological assistance, medical care and infrastructure recovery work.

Overheads and contributions

A total of R$ 1.5 billion has been invested in environmental services, health supplies, transportation and other logistical costs. So far, for example, approximately 190 million liters of water for human, animal and agricultural irrigation have been made available to 19 municipalities and more than 89 thousand pharmaceutical items have also been purchased.

With the objective of supporting the cities where Vale's operations have been suspended and contributing to the maintenance of the essential services offered to the population of the municipalities, the company signed an agreement with the Association of Mining Municipalities of Minas Gerais and Brazil (Amig) to make financial contributions totaling R$ 100 million. The measure will serve 10 municipalities: Barão de Cocais, Belo Vale, Congonhas, Itabirito, Mariana, Nova Lima, Ouro Preto, Rio Acima, São Gonçalo do Rio Abaixo and Sarzedo.

In recognition of the Minas Gerais Fire Department's work in Brumadinho, Vale formalized a contribution of R$ 20 million to purchase equipment, improve the structure and professional training of the corporation. Vale also signed an agreement with the State Government of Minas Gerais to support the safety of communities through donations to be made to the Civil Defense and Military Police. The investment in the Civil Defense, will total R$ 5 million and in the Military Police R$ 4 million. In addition, it has allocated R$ 6.5 million for the acquisition of state-of-the-art equipment for the Belo Horizonte Institute of Forensic Medicine (IML).

On February 18, Vale signed a cooperation agreement with the Brumadinho local government, contributing R$ 2.6 million to expand humanitarian assistance to the municipality, which has multi skilled teams working in the areas of health and psychosocial, the procurement of equipment and materials needed to provide these services, as well as supplying 20 vehicles to transport these specialists and properties to locate and promote this emergency service. The company has also provided extra assistance, including funeral to the representatives of the deceased. Assistance includes notary fees, transfer of bodies, ornamental urns, graves, burial etc.
