Mozambique – Vale Donates 40,000 Tests and Intensive Care Beds to Tete

Vale Mozambique donates 40,000 rapid tests to the Provincial Health Directorate of Tete to help to tackle the COVID-19

Vale Mozambique donates 40,000 rapid tests to the Provincial Health Directorate of Tete to help to tackle the COVID-19. Also, 20 beds are donated for intensive care units as well as various protective materials for health care professionals of this province.

This donation is part of the global humanitarian aid package amounting to US$2 million to the country and, since April, it has been helping several provinces to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus. In Tete, in addition to 40,000 serum epidemiological tests and 20 beds for intensive care units, 800 plastic aprons, 306 disposable gloves boxes, 200 safety goggles, 2,756 units of a glycerol-alcohol solution, 11,800 surgical masks, 100 pairs of PVC boots, ten endotracheal tubes, 48 trash cans, and 1,504 waterproof coveralls. 

According to Delmira Petersburgo, Vale's representative, "this action is according to the scope of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Vale and Government authorities to help prevent and tackle the pandemic in the country." She explained that, for Tete, the province where Moatize mine is located “the company donated 40,000 tests to support the serum-epidemiological survey that will be conducted by the National Health Institute with support from the health authorities of the provinces.”.

During the ceremony, Lourenço Boene, the representative of the State Secretary in the province of Tete, commended Vale's initiative and requested other companies to follow this example, joining them to tackle the pandemic in the province. “This equipment will guarantee a greater response capacity to prevent and tackle the COVID-19 in the province,” he stated. “I call on other companies to support health authorities.”
