Mozambique: Vale Provides Humanitarian Aid to Tackle the New Coronavirus

Aiming to support the fight against the pandemic of the new coronavirus, Vale signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Mozambican government, on April 17, in Maputo. The document was signed by Márcio Godoy, Vale’s country manager in Mozambique; Bruno Chicalia, Vale’s manager of Institutional Relations; and Iolanda Sofia da Silva Santos, Maputo’s provincial director of Health.

Vale’s aid amounts almost to USD2,000,000.00 (two million US dollars). It includes several hygiene products, hospital equipment, and individual protection items for health care professionals, as well as 80,000 rapid tests.

The list of individual protection items offered includes gloves, masks, protective goggles, boots, safety overalls, and aprons for health care professionals. Concerning hygiene products, the donation includes electric sprayers, alcohol for disinfection, soap bars, and bottles. In addition, when it comes to hospital equipment, infusion pumps, sample collection kits, aspirators, defibrillators, and others will be delivered.

The donation delivery process began on April 18, in Tete. However, in the coming days, the aid will arrive in other areas of the country, such as Maputo, Nampula, and Niassa. This imported material is expected to contribute to the efforts of national health authorities to tackle the spread of the disease in the country.

“We are aware of our responsibility in this challenging moment,” says Márcio Godoy, Vale’s country manager in Mozambique. This intervention shows our commitment to the Mozambican society since we understand that we are part of the communities into which we are integrated and that we are also an important agent of change.”

Vale emphasizes it is sparing no efforts to protect the health and safety of its employees and communities surrounding its operations by intensifying the preventive measures widely disseminated by the health authorities.
