Indonesia: Vale Supports East Luwu and South Sulawesi Government to Tackle COVID-19

Vale Indonesia Tbk is providing support to the Government of East Luwu Regency and South Sulawesi Province in tackling COVID-19. The support for East Luwu Government is given through the Task Force for the Acceleration of COVID-19 Handling (GTPP) East Luwu Regency. It is intended to help prevention programs in general and preparation of isolation rooms for COVID-19 patients’ intensive care at I Lagaligo Wotu Regional Hospital and Burau Community Health Center. While the support given to the Provincial Government of South Sulawesi is distributed through GTPP COVID-19 South Sulawesi Province and to Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital in Makassar.

The distribution of aid was carried out gradually, starting with 10 medical beds, disinfectant liquid, thermo guns, anti-hazardous material clothing, surgical masks, N95 masks, and rubber gloves. On Thursday, April 9, 2020 additional support in form of 13 medical beds for isolation rooms at Burau Community Health Center, 2 ventilator units for I Lagaligo Hospital, and 13 thermo guns to be used at 6 Command Posts under supervision of GTPP COVID-19 East Luwu. The support was handed over by Senior Manager Stakeholder Relations Vale Yusri Yunus and received by the Secretary of GTPP COVID-19 East Luwu, who also served as Head of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of East Luwu, Muhammad Zabur.

As for the South Sulawesi Province, Vale has also distributed health support on April 2nd, 2020 in form of an ambulance unit for one year operational period and 1,000 units of personal protective equipment (PPE) in the form of rubber gloves to Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital. The donation was received directly by the President Director Dr. dr. Khalid Saleh, Sp.PD-KKV, FINASIM, M. Kes. This hospital is one of the government’s referral hospitals in handling COVID-19 patients in South Sulawesi.

Previously on March 30, 2020, Vale also distributed personal protective equipment for medical personnel through GTPP COVID-19 South Sulawesi. The handover took place at Balai Prajurit Jenderal M. Jusuf and was received by the Chair of the provincial Task Force who is also Military Commander of XIV/Hasanuddin, Major General Andi Sumangerukka. The support provided included 800 units of N95 masks, 800 units of surgical masks, 200 units of rubber gloves and 100 units of anti-hazardous material clothing.

“We hope that our support can ease the burden of the Regional Government in implementing COVID-19 pandemic prevention and handling programs. Hopefully we can all support Government programs, including implementing social/physical distancing will full discipline, practice frequent hand washing, wearing masks every time we have to leave the house, and implementing clean and healthy lifestyles to improve immunity. Together, we can prevent the transmission and minimize the number of patients who need to be treated. Thus, the existing hospital has sufficient capacity to be able to serve and treat patients well,” said Nico Kanter, CEO of Vale.

At present, Vale is also preparing isolation rooms in Enggano and Old Camp Sorowako to anticipate the increasing needs of COVID-19 patients’ intensive care, especially in Vale’s operational area.
