Steelmaking

It is difficult for us in this modern world, to spend one day without a car, bus, refrigerator or elevator. Our everyday life, like that of thousands of others around the world, owes a great deal to steel and steel mills.

Steel has been essential since the Industrial revolution. It is produced from iron ore, our main raw material. The steel production process also uses coal.

Promoting the steel industry in Brazil, where our head offices and our major operations are located, is part of Vale’s global strategy.

Partnerships

We work in the steel market through joint ventures, like with the ThyssenKrupp Companhia Siderúrgica do Atlântico (TKCSA) plant. Located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, it is one of the biggest and most modern steel mills in the world.

We also have a participation in California Steel Industries, Inc. (CSI), which produces flat, laminated steels and ducts in the United States.

Projects

Steel plates in northeast Brazil

This will be the first steel plate mill in northeast Brazil. It is being constructed through a joint venture between Vale and two major South Korean steel companies, Dongkuk Steel Mill Co. and Posco. The plant will occupy a 980-hectare site in the Pecém Industrial and Port Complex in the municipality of São Gonçalo do Amarante. Several studies have been conducted to identify and rescue all the local fauna and flora.

The steel mill is expected to start operating in the first half of 2016. Its annual production capacity will be 3 million metric tons of steel plate. The plant should generate 4,000 direct jobs and another 12,000 indirect jobs, and increase the size of Ceará’s economy by 12%.
