Vale adopts new process to manage carbon emissions in supply chain

Vale is committed to raise the awareness of suppliers regarding climate change and engage them to improve their emission management. Since 2011, we have been promoting better emissions management in our value chain through a contractual clause and the annual application of a questionnaire about Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG) inventories. The reduction of GHG emissions in line with the Paris Agreement is part of Vale’s 2030 commitments.

In addition to the target set for emissions resulting directly from its operation (scopes 1 & 2), Vale undertakes to act also on indirect emissions, those resulting from activities related to the production of goods and services required for its production. The engagement of our suppliers in their emission management and the commitment to reduce environmental impacts are essential for us to achieve this goal together.

That is why, from this year on, Vale will adopt a new process to stimulate suppliers to contribute even more for the low carbon economy. Find out below what will change.

What will change for suppliers? As of this year, Vale suppliers considered key in terms of supply chain emissions will be invited to join the CDP Supply Chain program. Vale has been reporting information on climate change through the CDP for 14 years. The company will now join other 120 companies that use this internationally recognized, standardized reporting platform that provides technical support for engaging strategic suppliers on environmental issues, especially on climate change.
What is the CDP? CDP is a not-for-profit charity that runs the global disclosure system for investors, companies, cities, states and regions to manage their environmental impacts. To find out more about CDP, click here.
What about the suppliers that are not considered key to emission reduction? How will the annual GHG report work for them? These suppliers will also be invited to annually share information regarding their GHG emission management in a further moment. Stay tuned. Soon more information about this new report model will be shared.

Vale counts on the engagement of suppliers to improve their emission management.
