Vale's Critical Activity Requirements (CARs) have just been reviewed

Vale's Critical Activity Requirements (CARs) from 1 to 5 were reviewed. The purpose of this reformulation is to generate more rigid controls in order to prevent accidents. Our suppliers are our partners in the pursuit of Zero Damage. Therefore, they should always follow the Health, Safety and Environmental Requirements for Vale contractors – which include the CARs.

What are the CARs?

The Critical Activities Requirements are minimum health and safety regulations established by Vale with the purpose of preserving people’s lives during the execution of activities listed as critical, based on the history of fatalities that have occurred in our company and in the mining industry as a whole.

CAR 01 – Working at Heights

Working at heights involves the use of ladders, scaffolding, aerial work platforms, personnel hoisting equipment, among other means, with the potential for any person to fall 1.80 m or more. Not applicable to access to mobile equipment or railways, elevated work areas and footbridges.

CAR 02 – Light motor vehicles

Applies to automotive vehicles owned, leased or rented by Vale, as well as service providers vehicles that are part of the contract scope with Vale, that operate on public roads, internal areas, underground and surface mining areas. Types: cars, minivans, vans, minibus, bus, utility vehicles, pick-ups (standard or compact) and, personnel carriers.

CAR 03 – Mobile equipment operation

Applies to all mobile equipment owned, leased or rented by Vale, as well as service providers mobile equipment that are part of the contract scope with Vale, that operate on public roads, internal areas, underground and surface mining areas. Does not apply to railway equipment, overhead cranes and monorails.

CAR 04 – Lockout/Tagout and no Power

Applies to activities in plant, machinery and equipment requiring a lockout and tagout procedures to control the potential of a hazardous release of energy.

CAR 05 – Lifting of loads

Applies to lifting of loads by equipment owned, leased or rented by Vale, as well as service providers equipment that are part of the contract scope with Vale, from the following types of lifting equipment: cranes (wheel-mounted cranes, vehicle-mounted crane, tower cranes etc. ), overhead cranes, gantry cranes, monorails and electrical hoist.
