Sustainable Supplier

Since 2009, Vale counts on the Supplier’s Code of Conduct, which is now part of the registration process for new suppliers in Brazil. Today, all companies that sell materials, equipment and services associated with our operations need to follow and share the principles in the document. The code contributes by aligning our partners with the values and practices of Vale.

Our suppliers must comply with various commitments related to a number of issues, such as:

  • Health & Safety and Environment
  • Sustainability
  • Human Resources
  • Local law (labor, fiscal and taxes)

All workforce hired by suppliers must have a contract written in accordance with labor law. We also require that our supply chain (purchasing and customers) respects ILO Convention C138, which deals with the minimum age for employment admission.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions Program (GHGE)

Vale is committed to raise the awareness of its suppliers regarding climate change and engage them to improve their emission management. For this reason, we created the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Program (GHGE) in the Value Chain.

Since 2011, we have been promoting better emissions management in our value chain through training on the preparation of GHG inventories. In 2012, we were leaders in Brazil by including a clause in our standard contract that requires an annual submission of a questionnaire about GHG inventories*. Furthermore, we host periodical forums to promote exchange of experiences and to debate challenges related to the theme.

Greenhouse Gases Protocol (GHGP)

The GHGP is a tool that identifies, measures and manages CO2 emissions, and it’s used by companies and governments across the globe. Developed by the World Business Council on Sustainable Development (WBCSD), the Protocol is a standardization of calculations and offers methods so the companies can verify how much their production processes are emitting of the six gases considered causes for global warming. They are: carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), the hydrofluorocarbons (HF Cs) the perfluorocarbons (PFCs), and sulfur hexafluoride (SF 6).
