Vale has begun the process of cultural evolution, and diversity is a catalyst of this transformation. In this context, the company wishes to celebrate LGBTQIA+ Pride month with the whole community. We know that diverse thoughts, experiences and especially people contribute to creating a healthy, safe, and creative environment. Our team has a variety of professionals, including leaders who are active in the LGBTQIA+ movement. One of these leaders is Francinne Hansen, the Head of HR for Base Metals, who wrote an article to celebrate Pride month.
Unlike other industries, mining is predominantly male, so Vale wants to become more open to diversity and evolve with society. This year, for example, the company set the goal of doubling the female workforce from 13% to 26% by 2030. Another initiative is the creation of affinity groups to foster debate within the company. Currently, there are two groups of women addressing gender equity issues and another dedicated to LGBTQIA+ issues.
“I am one year in and am loving the people, the work and the opportunity to make Vale a truly inclusive and great company to be part of. This week we’re kicking off the International month of LGBTI Pride. Pride is all about equality and acceptance. It’s about embracing our true selves and living our authentic lives - regardless of sexual orientation, gender, ability, ethnicity, religion and so on. So while we take a moment to celebrate the value our differences bring to each other, our teams and the broader organization, let us also reflect on how the acceptance of these differences enable us to connect in a real and authentic way, where we discover we actually have much more in common than what sets us apart,” stated Francinne.

What does LGBTQIA+ mean?
It means Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Asexual, and + includes other identities. The letter Q stands for “queer” – an umbrella term for sexual and gender minorities that are not heterosexual or cisgender.
Lesbian and gay are terms for people who are emotionally and sexually attracted to the same gender. Bisexual is a term for people who are sexually attracted to both genders defined by society (male and female).
Transgender is a term for people whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth. This is not related to sexual attraction. Intersex is a term for people whose combination of genital and/or chromosome characteristics differs from traditional definitions of male and female (for example, being born with both genitalia or a combination of both reproductive systems).
Asexual is a term for people who have no sexual attraction to any gender but may or may not have emotional attraction.

Why is LGBTQIA+ Pride celebrated in June?
Imagine that you are in a bar with friends when the police arrive and begin to attack and arrest people. Police raids were common at the Stonewall Inn, a bar that catered to the LGBTQIA+ community in New York in the 1960s. At the time, a man had to be wearing three pieces of male attire and a woman had to be wearing three pieces of female attire in order to avoid being arrested for cross-dressing. Trans people and drag queens were immediately arrested.
In the early hours of June 28, 1969, the police decided to conduct another raid on the bar. It was the third time in a short period that police had raided a gay bar in the area near the Stonewall Inn. 13 people were arrested. Customers rioted, beginning the Stonewall Riot – a civil movement for LGBTQIA+ rights. This event gave rise to the first LGBTQIA+ activist groups in the USA, Brazil, and around the world. For this reason, International LGBTQIA+ Pride Day is celebrated on June 28.
