Study reveals positive link between mining and HDI of municipalities

Did you know that in Brazil communities with a mining vocation are more developed than other municipalities? The conclusion is from the article published in the American Journal of Environmental Science and Engineering . The study was based on the Master’s dissertation of Vale’s Carajás Performance Management specialist, Emanoel Nazário. The employee developed the thesis at Vale Institute of Technology (ITV).

Entitled “Mining Contribution to Municipalities Development”, the study reveals that municipalities with a mineral vocation have high rates. The Municipal Human Development Index (IDHM) of the United Nations Development Program and the FIRJAN Municipal Development Index (IFDM) were analyzed.

The average IDHM of the Brazilian municipalities is 0.659, while in the mining municipalities of Pará the indicator stands at 0.670. The HDI of municipalities that have mineral activity is greater than that of 93% of the other municipalities in Pará; that is, where there is no presence of mining. In Minas Gerias, the number is even higher: the IDHM is 0.731 in municipalities with mineral activity, surpassing the indicator of 91% of municipalities in the state that do not have mineral activity.
