Today was the last day to visit the craftwork exhibition hosted by Vale Botanical Park in São Luís, in the state of Maranhão. The event has been responsible for creating new business opportunities for a variety of artisans whose work provides them with an income stream. Throughout the year, the Park has held a number of events to promote local culture. By opening its doors to craftwork exhibitions, the Park hopes to promote the work of local artisans by introducing the public to pieces crafted from a wide range of materials and to publicize the creativity of its local talent.

The Botanical Park Handicrafts Exhibition featured more than 200 pieces crafted by artisans from São Luís and other municipalities in the state of Maranhão. Among the products on display, pride of place went to the jewelry, toys and decorative items. Materials used by the artisans ranged from burity fibre, seeds and cloth to recycled aluminum.

In the opinion of Andreza Rabelo, manager of the Maranhão Institute for Craftwork Development (Idam), one of the participants in the exhibition, the promotion of events such as this helps artists to connect with the public, as many have neither sufficient resources nor suitable venues to display their products. "We know how difficult it is for some of them to display their work and we recognize the efforts by the Botanical Park to assist in this process," she explains.

Aurea de Sousa is one of the artisans taking part in the event. For her, craftwork is a leisure activity that also helps supplement her monthly income. “I’ve been doing this kind of work for more than ten years now. When I started I was unemployed and managed to support myself with this work. Although I’ve got a proper job now with a fixed income, I haven’t stopped because it’s something I enjoy. I always participate in exhibitions and craft fairs as it helps me find new clients,” she says.
