Vale uses wind power as an alternative and sustainable energy source

Wind turbine and solar panels generate electricity for mine

Vale has adopted an alternative and sustainable energy solution at one of its mines in o Grosso do Sul, where access to electricity was difficult and costly. A wind turbine has been installed at the site to generate the power needed to feed four microwave radio sets, which provide a link enabling the operation’s communications.

The system also features solar panels that generate power during the day. The electricity is stored in battery banks and consumed by the radio equipment. Installing the wind turbine has made it possible to generate extra power during cloudy and rainy periods, as well as increasing the battery banks’ autonomy during the night.

After installing the wind power system, we obtained much greater power availability at the site, as we can not only use solar energy, but also generate electricity from the wind, which is very common in this hilly region.”

About wind power

Wind power can be transformed into mechanical or electricity energy. Energy is one of the world’s biggest problems at the moment. Most of the energy used on the planet has non-renewable origins, meaning it is based on resources that, once used, cannot be replaced by human action or nature within a useful timeframe. This means that once a certain quantity of a resource has been used, this same quantity will only be available again thousands or millions of years from now. In addition, many of these energy sources, such as oil, coal and natural gas, have very negative impacts on the environment, making the energy generated highly polluting.

Energy can be generated in a more intelligent, less polluting and cheaper manner. Electricity can be generated from the wind in a number of ways. The most common is through a wind turbine – an electric generator integrated with the shaft of a wind vane – which converts wind power into electricity. They can be installed onshore or offshore, where winds are more uniform. They have become widespread quickly as they are a source of renewable, non-polluting energy.
