From the outset of its operations in Indonesia, Vale’s vision has been of a mining company that protects nature for the future. One way to achieve this was the production of nickel using an eco-friendly technology in three hydroelectric power plants in the country: Larona, Balambano, and Karebbe.
The plants supply the electric power required to operate the smelting ore and nickel processing furnace at the processing plant in Sorowako. Vale Indonesia’s three hydroelectric plants generate power from three sources: Matano, Mahalona, and Towuti lakes. The water flows through Larona river into the turbines.
