Last week, Vale welcomed the first of ten 2nd generation VLOC’s (Very Large Ore Carrier), which have a capacity to transport up to 400,000 tons of ore. The vessel´s name - Yuan He Hai – is a combination of Chinese characters that symbolize the partnership between China COSCO Shipping, Vale and China State Shipbuilding. Peter Poppinga, Executive Director of Ferrous Minerals and Coal, together with other senior Vale Iron Ore and Shipping representatives from Singapore and China, were present for the naming ceremony, hosted by China COSCO Shipping and the China State Shipbuilding Corporation, marking the official delivery of the vessel.

“This partnership is not just about ore and vessels – this partnership also directly supports China’s continued growth, urbanization and sustainable development and this highlights the deepening cooperation among the three companies and the broader China-Brazil relationship”, said Peter.

Renata Costa Zingre, Global Shipping Director was invited to be the vessel’s godmother.

He also expressed how the event was a “great way of starting 2018 – which also marks Vale’s 45th year of commercial relations with China.”

More 2nd generation VLOCs are anticipated to be formally commissioned throughout 2018 – representing another major milestone for Vale and its Chinese logistics partners in providing our Chinese customers with the highest quality iron ore products and blends, tailored services and efficient logistical solutions.

The new vessels are a symbol of green innovation and will emit 18% less carbon dioxide than the first generation VLOCs and over 35% less than traditional bulk carriers.
