International Human Rights Day: check out the editorial by the Vale's Executive Vice President for Sustainability

Today, December 10, is the international Human Rights Day and in the year 2021 this date is even more emblematic. This year, we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, but we mourn the passing of Professor John Ruggie, its main mentor.

Vale´s commitment to the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights is translated into the company´s Global Human Rights Policy, into our management system, into the company's global integrated Risk map, and into the daily routine of each employees.

In practice, Vale is committed to respecting Human Rights, not causing any harm to people, and remediating the impacts we may cause or to which our activities may have contributed. We do this directly and through partners, seeking to involve stakeholders in the preparation and implementation of remediation actions, as is the case of the reparation process in Brumadinho and the support to the remediation process in Mariana.

In 2021, we continued our path in the management of Human Rights. Below, I share some highlights:

Training

73 thousand employees, or 99% of the total employees 60 thousand contractors

Risk and impact assessment

41 operational, operations and exploration complex

Due diligence

14 due diligence in operations and projects

We are committed to performing Human Rights due diligence in all operations and critical projects of our company, in 3-year cycles. Therefore, by 2023, all of our operations will have gone through Human Rights due diligence.

The path in the management of Human Rights in our company is long, however, I realize that we have reached the end of 2021 more confident that the respect for Human Rights is fundamental for our performance and that we are on the right path. This is everyone´s responsibility!

Cheers,
Maria Luiza Paiva
