Luiz Eduardo Osorio participates in the launch of Vale Quartz, in Switzerland

The Executive Director of Sustainability and Institutional Relations, Luiz Eduardo Osorio, participated this Thursday, June 7th, in the launch of Vale Quartz Project, an initiative that will use mining tailings to replace natural quartz in the production of Quartz Surfaces (an alternative to marble and granite). Around 60 people, among guests and journalists, attended the event, which was held in Saint-Prex, Vale’s headquarters in Switzerland.

The project was developed by Vale Switzerland Employee, Emile Scheepers, and focuses on creating an ecosystem that aims to transform iron ore tailings into a recycled sand, currently piloting with the Quartz Surface industry to supply a sustainable alternative to natural quartz in the production of durable and beautiful countertops. The pilot may become a blueprint for supplying other industries, such as industries that produces concrete products (e.g. railway sleepers), uses plaster sand (e.g. for brick laying) and perhaps even in the sports field, on golf courses and beach volleyball courts.

At the event, Osorio presented Vale's Sustainability strategy and praised the project.

Vale embeds innovation and sustainability through all the operations of its business. The Vale Quartz project is a great example.
