Pride and Care: How we have been working to build a safe environment for Vale’s LGBTQIA+ employees
Page Content
In June we celebrate the month of the LGBTQIA+ Pride, a date on which we take the opportunity to encourage
debate about the struggle of people in the LGBTQIA+ community for the right to be who they are. But building
a safe and healthy work environment – and society – is not done in just one month. Daily commitment and
concrete actions to welcome and combat discrimination are required.
At Vale, we seek to reinforce our commitment to fostering an environment of respect for the uniqueness of
each person through initiatives whose main focus is diversity, equity and inclusion.
Meet some of them:
- LGBTQIA+ Affinity Group
-
To encourage debate and the sharing of information and ideas within Vale, we have an LGBTQIA+
Affinity Group for employees interested in discussing the topic. All people in solidarity with
the community are invited to engage in the group’s actions.
- Hormone Therapy
-
Hormone therapy for gender transition is available, with 100% coverage, for all beneficiaries of
Vale’s health plan (whether employees or dependents).
In the company, trans people can also request the adjustment to the social name on the badge,
e-mail, Teams, among others.
- Sex reassignment surgery
-
Sex reassignment surgeries are now covered by Vale’s health plan. Sex reassignment is a set of
several clinical and surgical procedures, among which Vale covers all procedures that are
already on the ANS (National Supplementary Health Agency) list.
Covered procedures include:
• Mastectomy (breast removal)
• Hysterectomy (removal of the uterus)
• Oophorectomy or oophoroplasty (total or partial removal of the ovaries)
• Orchiectomy (removal of the testicles)
• Thyroplasty (laryngeal cartilage plastic surgery)
In addition, the health plan covers all the necessary psychological support before and after the
surgeries..
- Support channel
-
Listening, supporting and guiding: this is the purpose of a Vale’s new channel in Brazil. Created
to receive reports of sexual harassment and discrimination, the channel has a specialized and
independent team to welcome employees who are going through this type of situation in a
humanized way, making them safer to provide important information for the investigation process.
The new channel is now available in Brazil and will be expanded in waves to other countries.
Moreover, the company has internal actions aimed at ensuring psychological safety and awareness
among employees.
- Inclusion and Diversity Plan
-
The company has a tool that offers training on topics such as sexual and gender diversity as
well. The Inclusion and Diversity Plan is available to all employees.
- Celebrations
-
In 2021, we had Vale’s first LGBTQIA+ Pride Celebration, which brought together leaders,
employees and family members in a moment of celebration and awareness. More than 14,000
spectators celebrated this moment together. Furthermore, the company promotes recurring
workshops and training on the subject with employees.
At Vale, we are proud and celebrate the differences among our employees. So in the following few days we will
share stories of LGBTQIA+ employees who have made and are making a difference in our company. Keep up with
it!
