Environmental Reporting in Sudbury

Our company is committed to transparent and effective communication of our environmental responsibilities and activities.

Toxics Reduction

The Province of Ontario introduced the Toxics Reduction Act in 2009 to inform and protect Ontarians from chemicals in the air, water, land and consumer products.

While the metals we mine are naturally occurring substances, some have been classified as “toxics” under the Toxics Reduction Act. As there’s no way to reduce these naturally occurring materials, nor the desire to eliminate useful and recyclable metals from our economy, we are taking leadership in improving health outcomes when it comes to chemical exposures.

Vale’s Ontario Operations have taken inventory of applicable substances for the Copper Cliff Smelter and Copper Cliff Nickel Refinery in Sudbury and the Port Colborne Refinery.

National Pollutant Release Inventory

We are committed to being transparent with the results of our pollutant releases to the environment, reporting to the National Pollutant Release Inventory since 1994.

NPRI is Canada’s legislated, publicly accessible inventory of pollutant releases (to air, water and land), disposals and transfers for recycling, under the authority of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA 1999).
