Particulate Monitoring Program

Vale has been operating a comprehensive particulate monitoring network in Sudbury since taking over the operation of the Ministry of the Environment (MOE) network in 2005.

There are currently eight stations in operation. The dust is collected on filters over a 24-hour period every third day to correspond with a national predetermined sampling schedule. The filters are removed on non-sample days and sent to a lab where they are analyzed for metals such as nickel, cobalt, lead and arsenic. The results are calculated, compared to allowable air standards and reported to the MOE on a quarterly basis.

The operation, maintenance, analysis and reporting of the samples are conducted by a third party. The stations are audited by the MOE on a semi-annual basis to verify that they meet ministry operating standards.
