Vale supports the embroidery cooperative in Moatize (province of Tete) in the production of protective masks against COVID-19. A total of 1,700 masks will be made to be distributed to the communities surrounding the Moatize coal mine as well as to direct and third-party employees of Vale.

So far, over 300 units have been produced and delivered to the district government of Moatize. The masks are made from capulana and recyclable fabric from Vale's uniform shirts.

Rita Zunga, the coordinator of the cooperative, guarantees that the produced masks follow all the guidelines of the health authorities. “We comply with the recommendations of the Ministry of Health, such as three layers of cotton fabric, and we reuse Vale's uniform shirts that are in good conditions for the production of masks,” she explains.

Rita Sitoe, a dressmaker and a member of the cooperative, says that the opportunity offered by Vale has changed her life. “This work allows me to support my family and make other investments,” she comments. “Here we learn a lot and now that I have the opportunity to contribute to tackling this disease, I feel I play a significant role at this moment.”

Augusto Manuel, another dressmaker and member of the cooperative, stressed that professionalization has brought benefits to his career. “Now, people know that we have a cooperative and we do professional work, we seldom run out of work,” he comments. “Being able to help produce the masks for the prevention of COVID-19 is very gratifying for us.”

This embroidery cooperative was founded in 2017, providing several types of services. It is a Vale’s supplier for embroidering flags, uniform shirts, gifts, and other materials that Vale uses on visit events.

The initiative to support the production of masks is part of the efforts that Vale has been taking, thus reinforcing several protective measures to tackle the pandemic. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, Vale has proactively taken all preventive measures to avoid the spread of the disease in the country and ensure the safety of its employees and the communities surrounding its operations.
