World Day for Cultural Diversity: learn about the results of Vale Foundation actions

On May 21st, World Cultural Diversity Day for Dialogue and Development is celebrated. On this date, Vale reinforces that recognizes, promotes and celebrates the cultural diversity in its body of employees and contractors, as well as, in the communities it operates funding and promoting a range of initiatives on music and cultural festivals as well as art performances, and grants. All this deeply valuing local identities and knowledge. In 2019, Vale Foundation invested around R$50,9 million– of own and raised funds – on voluntary spends in social projects. These investments helped strengthen the human capital in the communities and the respect for local identities. Get to know some of the main results of the last year:

  • 690 social projects supported
  • 1.200 people benefited by rural development projects
  • 1.670 health professional trained
  • 940 participations of professionals in educational projects training
  • 77.200 students
  • 390 activities in education units
  • 4.500 people in the 5 Knowledge Stations
  • 500.000 visits in Vale’s museums and cultural centers: Casa da Cultura de Canaã do Carajás, Centro Cultural Vale Maranhão, Memorial Minas Gerais Vale e Museu Vale
  • BRL 50,9 million invested in voluntary social projects (direct funds and donations)
  • 620 exhibitons and cultural events held

Besides those initiatives, Vale is dedicated to building respectful relations with indigenous peoples and traditional communities. There are 38 indigenous peoples and 48 traditional communities with whom Vale develops relations. These groups carry different practices and cultural values inestimable to diversity. Vale is in more than 27 countries acting always to support the dialog among people of different origins and cultural practices. Vale is certain that each person plays a part in the strengthening of our company. Dozens of languages are spoken in our operations; diverse cuisines figure side by side in our cafeterias; many religions, beliefs and traditions together allow us to see reality with creativity, to innovate and to cherish difference.

About this date

In 2002, the United Nations General Assembly chose this date to signal the world reflection on the role of cultural diversity in dialog and development. Recognizing the right to cultural identity of each group and person means respecting the everybody ‘s right to be different. It also means strengthening the capacity for dialog and for exchanging experiences and ideas right because they are different.

Every country, region and ethnicity have different ways of seeing itself, each other and the world. All this diversity represents tremendous wealth. As it happens on innovation environments where diversity provides resilience, adaptability and sustainability; in societies the diversity in traditions, customs and thought allows us to find elaborate and adequate solutions for more complex challenges.
