Carajás Herbarium is part of the international network on flora, managed by The New York Botanical Garden

The main function of a Herbarium is the documentation of botanical researches. The Carajás Herbarium, located in the Vale Zoobotanical Park area, in southeastern Pará, has a collection of about five thousand records of plants, grouped in 163 families. And now, all this documentation is part of the Index Herbariorum (IH), reference source and international consultation on flora, managed by The New York Botanical Garden.

“As of the inclusion, we have entered the international network of herbariums and can also be consulted as sources for researches on the flora of the Carajás region”, explains the HCJS environmental analyst and trustee Lourival Tyski.

The trustee says that the contribution of the herbarium goes beyond the scientific researches. “The registration in the Index Herbariorum reinforces, before the scientific community, the Vale’s commitment to the preservation of the environment and shows the company’s concern to contribute and provide a legacy for the region”, he concludes.
