There are many doubts about who should wear individual protection masks, how effective they are, and the correct use. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that only people who have respiratory symptoms – such as coughing, sneezing, or breathing difficulties – or those taking care of someone with symptoms or suspected cases shall wear masks. Those who are healthy and with no symptoms do not need to wear a mask.

According to the WHO, the mask is only effective if combined with frequent handwashing with soap and water or alcohol-based hand rub. Also, the person must be attentive when disposing of the mask to avoid contamination of hands or other surfaces. Remember that masks for individual use are not reusable, so dispose of them and wash your hands properly.

Who shall wear a mask

  • People with respiratory symptoms (coughing, sneezing, breathing difficulties);
  • People taking care of suspected or confirmed coronavirus cases;
  • Health care professionals.

How to wear the mask

  • Before putting the mask on, clean your hands thoroughly;
  • Cover your mouth and nose and make sure there are no gaps between your face and the mask;
  • Avoid touching the mask while wearing it; if you do, clean your hands immediately.

How to remove the mask

  • Start by pulling it backward;
  • Do not touch the front part of the mask;
  • Dispose of it immediately;
  • Then wash your hands (hygiene).
