25 tons of oil per hour is the extraction capacity of the Biopalm plant

What is the connection between dendê oil, a much-used ingredient in Brazilian cuisine, and a locomotive? The answer lies in Vale investments in technology and our commitment to sustainability, factors which gave rise to Biopalma: a partnership with the MSP Group.

Since June 2012, Biopalma has been operating its first extraction plant of dendê palm oil from the fruit of this African palm tree also found in Brazil. Starting in 2016, Vale will produce biodiesel, and use B20 – a mixture with 20% biofuel and 80% common diesel, giving us the capability to refuel locomotives and machinery used in our operations in Brazil.

The decision to invest in biodiesel production is part of the Vale strategy to diversify the energy grid and be a global agent of sustainability.
