Community Investment Criteria and Application

We gladly respond to all funding requests. Our ability to support projects depends on both their ability to meet our national and local funding criteria and the funds we have available.

National funding criteria

For programs that are national in scope, we give preference to those that: 

  • ​Are broad in scope but have either local or stakeholder appeal,​
  • Align or connect with Vale’s values, principles, business objectives and/or priorities,
  • Will have an impact in areas where Vale is present,
  • Fulfill a compelling need and do not duplicate existing services or facilities that we support,
  • Provide long-term, sustainable, positive results for the greatest number of people possible,
  • Come from an organization that is financially viable (can provide financial s​tatements upon request) and efficiently and ​effectively managed,
  • Include options or potential fo​r Vale employee engagement where possible,
  • Clearly outline options and potential for appropriate recognition of Vale’s support,
  • Include measurable outcomes and report to Vale on outcomes on a regular basis and
  • Exhibit project and/or organization innovation in their approaches to their work in their way of addressing community challenges and in their request to Vale.

Local funding criteria

For local programs, we give preference to those that: 

  • Support local infrastructure, education, environment, or health,
  • Align or connect with Vale’s values, principles, business objectives and/or priorities,
  • Reflect Vale’s presence in the area,
  • Fulfill a compelling need and do not duplicate existing services or facilities that we support,
  • Provide long-term, sustainable, positive results for the greatest number of people possible,
  • Come from an organization that is financially viable (can provide financial statements upon request) and efficiently and effectively managed,
  • Include options or potential for Vale employee engagement where possible,
  • Clearly outline options and potential for appropriate recognition of Vale’s support,
  • Include measurable outcomes and report to Vale on outcomes on a regular basis, and
  • Exhibit project and/or organization innovation in their approaches to their work in their way of addressing community challenges and in their request to Vale.

Exclusion criteria

We regret that (except in unique circumstances) we cannot respond to requests from:

  • Organizations without a tax-registered number or non-profit society number,
  • Projects operating outside of Canada,
  • Individual applicants,
  • Conferences, seminars, congresses or workshops,
  • Telephone solicitations,
  • Professional associations/events,
  • Private clubs funded through membership fees,
  • Travel, accommodation, meal expenses, field trips or tours,
  • Competitive sports teams and
  • Student or alumni organizations.

Application and approval process

If you’ve submitted an online application for support, you’ll receive an email confirmation as soon as it’s received. Your request will be reviewed by our Community Investment Committee, which meets three times a year. You can expect a written response within about 12 weeks.
