Life in Sudbury

Five rowers in a boat on a lake in Sudbury Sudbury, Ontario, home to our Ontario Operations, is where the company’s history in Canada began. There has been exploration and mining in and around this mineral-rich community for more than 100 years.

Located about 400 kilometres north of Toronto and surrounded by lakes and wilderness, Sudbury is the perfect place for outdoor enthusiasts to call home. It’s known as one of the sunniest places in Canada and is a great base for golfing, skiing, hiking, biking, camping, hunting, fishing and boating.

But Sudbury’s urban side has a lot to offer, too. With a population of about 160,000, the city serves as the regional capital of northeastern Ontario and a hub for education and healthcare for the North. The city hosts two colleges and Laurentian University, which has a new school of medicine and a newly announced school of architecture. And Sudbury’s hospital provides services to more than 600,000 people across Northern Ontario.

In total, Vale employs about 4,000 people in Sudbury. We have six mines, a mill, a smelter and a refinery in this city, making our site one of the largest integrated mining operations in the world.
