Vale is to sponsor the restoration of Saint Luzia’s Church in downtown Rio de Janeiro, a few meters from the company’s global head office. Built in the 18th century, the church is one of the city’s most important historical monuments and was granted protected status by the government in 1938. The restoration work will take six months and cost R$1.7 million, obtained by means of a law that provides tax incentives to promote charitable giving.
The initiative is in line with Vale’s strategy of respecting the historical and cultural heritage of the locations where it operates. Elsewhere in Rio, the company recently sponsored a restoration of the Christ the Redeemer statue and a revamp of the Municipal Theater.
During the work, leaks in the roof will be fixed, the church will be fumigated, the electrical and hydraulic systems will be improved and plans will be created for the church’s regular maintenance and the exhibition of its large document archive. The work will be supervised by a multidisciplinary team from the National Institute for Historic and Artistic Heritage (Iphan-RJ).
