Vale chose World Forest Day, March 21, to stage a discussion focused on preserving large forests. Held in Rio de Janeiro, the event, which celebrated the International Year of Forests, was attended by various government and NGO representatives, who discussed how to conciliate economic and social development with the preservation of large forests. They concluded that it is necessary to incorporate Brazilian forests in a development framework by valuing biodiversity, promoting sustainable consumption and investing in research and technology.
The company’s Environment and Sustainable Development director, Vância Somavilla, predicted that opportunities for partnership between government entities, the third sector and private enterprise will pave the way for Brazil to develop in a sustainable manner, conciliating forest preservation and productive activities.
“Based on contributions from the whole of society, we will manage to build a better reality for ourselves. We are not an island,” said the executive, who also stated that Brazil has better potential than any other country to advance in a more equal manner, forging its own model for growth and consumption.
The debating table brought together four other specialists in environmental issues: Bráulio Dias, biodiversity and forests secretary at the Ministry of the Environment; Fábio Scarano, executive director of Conservation International in Brazil; Tasso Azevedo, forest engineer and former director general of the Brazil Forestry Service; and Roberto Waak, head of Amata, a forestry company. The panel was mediated by journalist Agostinho Vieira, a columnist for O Globo.
