To help victims of the rains in the Serrana region of Rio de Janeiro, the scene of the worst climate tragedy in Brazil’s history, Vale ran a campaign to collect cash donations which closed on February 1. The initiative was promoted by the mining company through the Vale Foundation. With a tripling of each deposit made by individuals (for every R$1 donated, Vale added R$2), the campaign has made R$2,363,503.50.
Proceeds from donations of employees, family and friends were R$765,077.46. With the remaining R$ 1,530,154.92 donated by Vale itself. Other companies, mainly suppliers of Vale, donated R$ 68,271.50. All funds will be used in construction works or projects to benefit effected communities.
Vale also ran a campaign on Twitter, donating R$1 for each retweet @Vale_Solidaria. This also ended on January 31 with a total 16,455 retweets.
Besides these initiatives, there were internal campaigns involving employees with distribution of food, water and other donations. Suppliers and partners helped with transportation and provided heavy equipment to the region when requested by the State Government.
