At the end of March, a delegation of government officials from the Atacama region of Chile went to Vale’s Corumbá Complex in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, to widen their knowledge of safety practices. Led by Governor Ximena Matas Quilodrán, the group visited underground and open-pit iron ore mines at the site.
The aim of the visit was to take best practices in workplace safety, operations and the environment back to Chile. After an accident involving 33 Chilean miners last year, the government is working to improve preventive safety measures.
Safety and environmental restoration
During the visit, the governor praised the safety equipment she saw and stressed the importance of the practices used by Vale for environmental restoration in mined areas.
The Chilean delegation also met with representatives of the Mato Grosso do Sul Federation of Industry (FIEMS) and the state government. This meeting gave rise to the possibility of future agreements for cooperation in education and training in the fields of mining and renewable energy.
