The passenger train service operated by the Carajás Railroad (EFC) in Brazil is celebrating its 25th anniversary. The railroad connects Maranhão to Pará and carries more than 1,000 people every day across 25 municipalities in the two states. To improve the service and ensure that people with disabilities enjoy full access, the EFC’s stations are being refurbished and their employees are undergoing training.

At the start of this year, new equipment was installed at the railroad station in São Luís, Maranhão and ramps with handrails were installed. By the end of March, similar work will have been completed at stations in Santa Inês and Açailândia in Maranhão and Marabá and Parauapebas in Pará.

The train has adapted, exclusive cars for people with disabilities and a first aid post staffed by a trained technical team. The train’s employees and supervisors have done sign language training. This is important, given that a large number of people with hearing disabilities go to São Luís for medical treatment.
