 Vitória-Minas Railroad

Train

The Vitória-Minas Railroad (known by its Portuguese acronym, EFVM) was established in Brazil in 1904. Considered one of the most efficient and productive railroads in the country, it connects the mines of Vale’s Southeast System to Tubarão Port Complex in the state of Espírito Santo, and is also integrated with the Centro-Atlântica Railroad.

Extending across a 905-km network, EFVM transports around 40% of Brazil’s entire rail freight. An average of 70 freight trains travel on the railroad every day, carrying more than 135 million metric tons of goods per year. Of this total, 80% is accounted for by iron ore, with the rest consisting of over 60 different products, from coal to agricultural products.

For more than a century, EFVM has also operated the only long-distance passenger train service in Brazil. Over one million passengers travel every year between Vitória in Espírito Santo and Belo Horizonte in Minas Gerais. On public holidays, as many as 4,500 people take the train in a day.
