Onca Puma Project

Nickel is typically extracted from two types of ore deposits: sulfides (generally found in more temperate regions and often at great depths) and laterites (generally found in tropical regions and predominantly near the Earth’s surface).

The process of extracting pure nickel from a deposit occurs in various stages and differs between sulfides and laterites.

The world’s second largest producer of nickel, Vale mines both sulfide and laterite ores, and operates several different processes and refineries to produce nickel to meet the needs of the market.

  • [ + ]We conduct electrolytic and carbonyl refining

Vale also produces lower grade nickel (Utility Nickel, Tonimet) and will be producing ferronickel from the Onça Puma project for the stainless steel and other melting industries.
