Vale has various steel project partnerships in Brazil:
In June 2010, Vale and ThyssenKrupp inaugurated ThyssenKrupp Companhia Siderúrgica do Atlântico (TKCSA), one of the biggest and most modern steel mills in the world, located in Rio de Janeiro. In addition to a steel mill equipped with two blast furnaces and a coke plant, the complex has its own seaport and thermal power plant fueled by gases generated during the production process. TKCSA is the result of a partnership between Vale and ThyssenKrupp Steel.
Vale is building a steel plate mill in Ceará, in partnership with Dongkuk and Posco, the biggest steel companies in South Korea. Pecém Steel Company (known by its Portuguese acronym, CSP) will produce electricity for its own use, with surplus power supplied to the national grid.
We are conducting studies into implementing the Aços Laminados do Pará (ALPA) project, which entails building a steel mill in Marabá, in the state of Pará.
The two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding to conduct a feasibility study for a rolling mill. The mill is designed to produce hot-rolled steel (710,000 metric tons per year), cold-rolled steel (450,000 metric tons per year) and galvanized steel (150,000 metric tons per year), using steel plate supplied by ALPA. The plant will be located on ALPA’s site. We expect that our share of the total investment will be 25%.
The Ubu Steel Company (known by its Portuguese acronym, CSU) will be built in Anchieta, in the south of Espírito Santo. In March 2011, the State Environment Council approved the preliminary license for the construction of the steel mill.
