[ + ]Vale Space in Rio de Janeiro Botanical GardenVale has a partnership with the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden to restore and maintain its arboretum. The “Vale Space” features rare Brazilian plants, including species found in areas of low population density and that are endangered. [ + ]Environmental Extension ProgramIn partnership with the state government of Espírito Santo, the Environmental Extension program helps to restore forests in official Permanent Preservation Areas around springs. The focus is on degraded grazing land located on rural properties in inland Espírito Santo.
We are responsible for producing restoration plans for the areas covered, donating saplings of native regional species to replant degraded areas with, and supplying ant insecticide. We also provide technical assistance to the rural landowners benefited by the initiative. [ + ]Pilot Forests ProjectIn partnership with the state government of Espírito Santo, this project creates and maintains model forests in degraded areas. [ + ]Carajás Region Mosaic of Conservation UnitsThe Carajás Region Mosaic of Conservation Units, in the southeast of the state of Pará, is a large area of forest that Vale helps to protect in partnership with Brazilian environment agency Ibama and the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio).
The Mosaic is composed of Carajás National Forest (411,950 hectares), Tapirapé-Aquiri National Forest (192,550 hectares), Itacaiúnas National Forest (82,450 hectares), Tapirapé Biological Reserve (99,700 hectares) and Igarapé do Gelado Environmental Protection Area (20,640 hectares). In all, the area covers over 800,000 hectares. [ + ]Ilha Grande State ParkVale has an agreement with the state government of Rio de Janeiro to help preserve this park, which covers approximately 12,000 hectares. Administered by the State Environment Institute (Inea), the park extends over 62% of the island of Ilha Grande, which is recognized by UNESCO as an Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve.
Environmental restoration and conservation projects are carried out in the park in line with special ecological restoration models. Vale also supports the park’s management organization, which has a tree nursery capable of producing 60,000 saplings. [ + ]Sooretama Biological ReserveSooretama Biological Reserve, located in the state of Espírito Santo, covers more than 24,000 hectares. It is a federal Conservation Unit administered by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio). Vale helps to preserve the reserve through activities focused on combating hunting, the collection of specimens and forest fires.
The reserve borders on the Vale Natural Reserve. Together, the two reserves represent the largest remaining area of flatland Atlantic Forest in Brazil, accounting for around 10% of the state’s native forest cover.
