On 20 October, Vale and the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV), located in Brazil, signed a memorandum of understanding to carry out agricultural projects in Oman. The aim is to fight pests that afflict mangos, limes and dates, important export crops for Oman.
To implement the project, a partnership has been created between UFV, Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) and the Omani ministry of agriculture. The initiative will involve four years of research and total investment of around R$10 million, channeled through the Vale Technology Institute (ITV).
The agreement will contribute to deploying Brazilian science internationally. At the same time, Vale is investing in Oman’s growth, promoting scientific and technological research to solve serious problems that affect parts of its economy.
US$1.35 billion investment
UFV was chosen as it is a world reference in agricultural research. We are investing US$1.35 billion in Oman to build a pelletizing plant with nominal capacity of 9 million tons per year, as well as a port complex that will be able to accommodate 400,000-dwt Valemax ships.
