 International initiatives

In order to help preserve the environment, Vale invests in various actions in countries where it is present, working together with local communities. Two examples of such projects took place at the end of September: a campaign to clean up Asunción Bay in Paraguay and aerial seeding in Ontario, Canada.

In Paraguay, we supported a local NGO’s initiative to clean up Asunción Bay. The region is an important stopover location for rare species of migrating birds. The work involved 200 volunteers, who removed a total of five tons of inorganic waste from the area.

Meanwhile in Canada, Vale conducted the latest stage of its aerial seeding program as part of the process of restoring degraded land around its mining operations in the Sudbury area. Over a two-week period, aircraft deposited their loads of agricultural lime, grass seeds and fertilizer over 162 hectares of land to the southeast of Coniston in Ontario. Launched in 1990 with the support of Laurentian University, the program has so far restored over 2,100 hectares.
