Energy management and generation are priorities for Vale. For this reason, we are developing projects to make ever greater use of renewable energy sources and systematize information to help us take strategic decisions and reduce risks.
To planour integrated energy efficiency actions, we carry out diagnoses to identify risks and opportunities in our operations. Based on their results, we establish actions ranging from one-off measures to structured initiatives.
In 2010, Vale implemented automatic energy balance systems at plants in Brucutu (Minas Gerais State), and concluded engineering studies at our Carajás operating units and in the urban center of Carajás (Pará State), at Vale Manganesein BarbacenaandFábrica Nova (Minas Gerais), and at the Pelletizing Utilities Plant in the state of Espírito Santo. In addition, 22 projects were initiated in various areas, from fixing leaks to replacing equipment.

Investment in energy generation
Vale produces some of its electricity needs through hydroelectric power plants and fuel generation potential. A major energy consumer, the company believes it must invest to meet the demands of its global operations.
We have the strategic priority of using more renewable fuels as a share of our total energy use. In 2011, we acquired a 70% stake in Biopalma da Amazônia S.A., which produces palm oil, a raw material used to make biodiesel. Our intention is to power our fleet of locomotives and heavy machinery at our operations in Brazil with biodiesel.
