In 2009, Vale led an initiative to send an open letter on climate change to the Brazilian government, together with the Ethos Institute and the Sustainable Amazon Forum. The letter presented the voluntary commitments of 30 large Brazilian companies to contribute to reducing carbon emissions.
The document was subsequently recognized by the United Nations Leadership Forum on Climate Change as an important initiative in the sector. Vale has strictly observed the commitments set out in the letter and seeks to continually improve its platform for communicating its activities among its stakeholders.
In line with this commitment, we have developed a tool for forecasting and managing our greenhouse gas emissions.
Cutting emissions: a joint initiative
As reducing emissions needs to be a global initiative, we are counting on the support of our suppliers. The aim is to involve our partners in a well developed strategy for managing emissions.
In addition, we continue to participate in discussions on regulatory frameworks and the development of carbon markets with corporate entities such as the Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS), the São Paulo State Federation of Industry (FIESP) and the National Confederation of Industry (CNI). We also take part in public forums where these subjects are discussed, such as the Sustainable Amazon Forum and the World Economic Forum.
Vale has also been participating in discussions related to this theme in the Canadian provinces of Manitoba, Ontario, and Newfoundland and Labrador. In Sudbury, the company is a managing partner in the Greater Sudbury Climate Change Consortium.
