Vale’s concern for sustainability and the environment where it is present has led it to develop projects and programs to cut greenhouse gas emissions in its operations.
Every year, the company voluntarily discloses information on its greenhouse gas emissions in its Sustainability Report, and also through other initiatives, such as the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and the Brazilian Greenhouse Gas Protocol Program, coordinated by the Getulio Vargas Foundation in partnership with the Mineral Resources Institute and the Business Council for Sustainable Development.
Our company has been awarded a gold rating by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Program in recognition of its complete and verified inventory of greenhouse gas emissions.
Vale’s total greenhouse gas emissions were approximately 20 million metric tons of CO2-equivalent in 2010. Most of these emissions were generated in Brazil (15,046,310.51 metric tons). Other countries where Vale’s operations produced significant emissions are Indonesia (2,222,295.01 metric tons) and Australia (1,034,866.08 metric tons).
Due to all of its efforts, Vale maintains its position as the most transparent Latin American company at disclosing greenhouse gas emission details, according to a global report produced by the CDP.
