Vale Florestar

In 2007, we created the Vale Florestar (Vale Forest) project to promote the reforestation of degraded areas with both native and exotic species. In partnership with Brazil’s development bank, BNDES, and the employees’ pension funds of Caixa Econômica Federal (Funcef) and Petrobras (Petros), in 2010 the initiative was expanded and transformed into Vale Florestar S.A., one of the biggest reforestation funds in Brazil.

The Fund operates in parts of the Amazon region where expanding human activities have already caused large areas of forest to be cleared. The aim is to encourage long-term forest enterprises. Through a multiplier effect, these enterprises will spread a culture of sustainable development, thereby helping to minimize damage to native forest.

Project passes the 95,000-hectare mark

Since the Fund was established, 69 farms have been leased, covering an area of 989 km². Of this total, 625 km² are allocated for protecting and restoring native forest, 364 km² are being used for commercial plantations, and the remainder is for infrastructure required for tree planting and other purposes.

The project’s employees conduct constant monitoring of the areas. If any fires break out, teams are activated and water tankers are used to fight them. These actions guarantee protection for the forests.
