Taking place at the Ballroom of Four Point Hotel, Makassar, PT Vale held a National Sustainability Symposium for the second time. The theme was “Renewable Energy for the Future” which presented experts in the field of new and renewable energy (EBT) such as the Head of Sub Directorate for Variety of New and Renewable Energy Programs, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Tony Susandy, ST, MBA and Director of Irrigation Bappenas Abdul Malik Sadat Idris, ST, MEng. Meanwhile, PT Vale was represented by Deputy CEO Febriany Eddy and Director Engineering, Maintenance & Utilities Abu Ashar. The event was opened by South Sulawesi Deputy Governor Andi Sudirman Sulaiman who conveyed the importance of collaboration between the government and the private sector in terms of increasing the use of EBT in the future.

Tony Susandy, said that the share of EBT in Indonesia until 2018 was only 8.55% with a target in 2025 of 23%. The Government’s plan until 2025 is to increase its portion mainly based on hydro, mini hydro, and geothermal energy due to its abundant potential and development contracts. Indonesia’s commitment to face climate change, one of which is through the Quick Win 2020 Program which contains priority of the electricity supply for smelter projects that use EBT.

While Abdul Malik said that Indonesia is a country with the eighth largest potential of hydropower in the world but ranked 33 in the number of installed hydropower capacity. Indonesia has an EBT potential of 419.3 Gigawatts while the installed capacity is only 10.2 GW. With the potential of water resources owned by our country, hydropower is the largest EBT generator (52%) and can still be developed.

Febriany Eddy emphasized the big role of private sector in increasing the use of EBT and encouraging energy independence. Nickel has a crucial role in the transition to a low carbon economy, especially with the boom in electric cars in the coming years. PT Vale continues to look for potential and develop initiatives to utilize EBT in the future. “We have conducted studies and have plans to find new renewable energy sources, such as heat recovery, small hydro, wind and solar power. PT Vale has also done power shifting and energy conservation,” Abu Ashar added.

Along with the Symposium, an awarding ceremony was also held for the winners of Vale Journalistic Writing and Photography Contest 2019 which carried the theme “Sustainable Mining and Contribution to Civilization”. This contest is an appreciation from PT Vale for the work of journalists that focuses on the sustainable mining campaign.

The prize presentation was carried out by PT Vale’s Deputy CEO along with Press Council Member Agus Sudibyo and Director of ANTARA Journalistic Photo Gallery Oscar Motuloh as the Jury. The event was attended by more than 200 invited guests from the Central and Provincial Governments, South Sulawesi DPRD, Makassar City DPRD, NGOs, and academics. [ ]
