As part of Vale Journalistic Writing & Photography Competition 2019, PT Vale facilitated judges’ visit to PT Vale’s operational area in Sorowako, South Sulawesi. The visit, which took place on August 17-19, was aimed at introducing nickel mining and processing operations, as well as showing some of the sustainability activities carried out by PT Vale.

Three judges for Writing Competition category are Ahmad Djauhar and Agus Sudibyo from the Press Council, and Tri Agung Kristanto from PWI Pusat. Three other judges for the Photography Competition category, Oscar Motulloh, Ardiles Rante and Ahmad Zamroni, were unable to attend the visit.

During the visit, judges had the opportunity to observe nursery facilities, mining activities, post-mining land rehabilitation activities, nickel processing activities at the processing plant, as well as electricity generation in Karebbe Hydroelectric Power Plant. Besides getting an explanation from PT Vale’s team about the operation process, the judges also had the opportunity to take photos during the visit.

This visit gives us a better understanding on PT Vale’s operations in producing nickel, and see how PT Vale carries out its responsibilities specifically for environment after the mining process is complete.

“This visit gives us a better understanding on PT Vale’s operations in producing nickel, and see how PT Vale carries out its responsibilities specifically for environment after the mining process is complete. It is great to see that the post-mining area has been very well rehabilitated by PT Vale,” said Ahmad Djauhar who is the Deputy Chair of the Press Council. “We look closely at the nickel production process. With this understanding, we are ready to assist the Journalistic Competition Committee to assess the Journalistic Report produced by journalists who write about PT Vale,” added Tri Agung Kristanto who also serves as Deputy Editor in Chief of Kompas Daily.

Meanwhile, Agus Sudibyo hopes that in addition to going through journalistic competitions, PT Vale will also play a role in developing journalist competencies through the socialization of the Press Law and Journalistic Code of Ethics, as well as introducing mining journalistic ethics to PT Vale’s media partners. “The visit of the senior journalists as well as the judges of this journalistic competition supports us to establish a more professional and effective relationship with the media, which is one of the Company’s important stakeholders,” said Bayu Aji, PT Vale’s Senior Manager of Communications.

On this occasion, the judges and PT Vale’s Communications team conducted intense discussions regarding the Journalistic Competition. One of them is an agreement to extend the duration of the competition to 30 September 2019. Detailed information about Vale Journalistic Competition 2019 can be accessed through here.

At the end of the visit, the three guests expressed their positive impression to the beauty of Sorowako, especially Lake Matano. “People should get to know a lot of beautiful places like Sorowako. If there is opportunity, I would like to invite my family to take some vacation in this place. This is a rich and beautiful place,” concluded Agus Sudibyo.
