A 5% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 is a global target for Vale. Read about worldwide initiatives to meet this objective:
Underground gases are drained and flared off before the areas are mined. As a result, in 2012 we avoided emitting gases equivalent to the amount that would be produced in a year by around 140,000 cars in Australia.
Gasoline is gradually being replaced by ethanol, a renewable fuel that pollutes less.
Fuel oil has been replaced by natural gas in three plants at the Tubarão Complex, reducing CO² emissions to the atmosphere.
Three initiatives have enhanced energy efficiency at our plants: optimization of diesel electrical energy generators; implementation of heaters using glycol (alcohol) in place of electricity, and installation of a glycol distribution grid to reduce oil consumption.
Installation of our third hydroelectric plant in the country has reduced consumption of thermally-generated energy.
