Vale clarification on news article

​​Rio de Janeiro, January 16th, 2020 – Vale S.A (“Vale” or “Company”) informs that it is aware of the news article published today by the Brazilian newspaper Valor Econômico, under the title “Vale suspends Ferrous mine operation”, and clarifies that, preventively, it had made the decision to halt operations of the waste and tailings pile at the Esperança mine soon after taking the control of the Ferrous Group.

The preventive measure had been taken to carry out a technical assessment and, currently, works to increase the pile safety are underway. The Esperança mine encompasses a processing plant with annual production of around 1.2 million tons of iron ore.
