Residents of Mariana and Barra Longa return to their homes

6/22/2016 10:00 AM

Rebuilding work in the municipalities of Mariana and Barra Longa continues to progress. So far, 92 houses and 28 stores have been renovated. Another 33 homes and 6 stores are still undergoing work, and they will be handed over to local people soon.

All the impacted families have been given houses or other accommodation chosen by them. Adirce is one of the residents who have received their renovated house and she has been able to get back to her normal life. Her house has two bedrooms, a bathroom, living room, kitchen and laundry area. The retiree was also given a full set of brand new furniture and home appliances.

Samarco is also carrying out initiatives to restore the communities’ economies and income generation capacity. For example, the company has given Márcia Silva all the materials needed for her to resume making candies, helping her to complement her income as a government employee.

Containment wall

The company has finished building a containment wall along the Carmo River in Barra Longa. The 300-metre-long structure will prevent water from spilling over into the gardens of nearby houses and other plots of land. The wall is made of gabions, wire cages filled with rocks, providing a strong but flexible and water-permeable barrier of great durability and resistance.
