Our decisions are based on dialogues maintained with different publics including employees, shareholders, investors, clients, suppliers, the public sector, labor unions and business associations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and society at large.

We know that mining makes use of land and resources and our presence in certain areas really begins before implanting any activity and lasts a long time after the project has been concluded. Sustainability implications in our business go well beyond the territories where we are present and our ability to influence these regions also extends to our suppliers and our clients and other partners in the value chain.

We believe that responsible mining activities committed to sustainable development is one of the best opportunities for communities to reach their full socio-economic potential. This is possible while also acting with environmental responsibility.

There are many ways to dimension the importance that we, at Vale, give to social issues. One of them is the Fundação Vale that develops programs in partnerships with NGOs, local government authorities and society to promote the social, environmental and economic development of the locations wherever the company is present.

Vale also makes solid investments in environmental conservation programs to rehabilitate native plant species typical of the Atlantic Rainforest, Cerrado and Amazonian eco-regions. We make use of advanced reforestation technology to revive the forestry cycle in five of the seven Brazilian biomes.

In line with our strategic priorities, the figure earmarked for investment in corporate social responsibility for 2010 is US$ 999 million, including US$ 829 million for environmental conservation and protection and US$ 170 million for social projects.
